  1. These pictures show the type of small machinery used to train students on Skidsteer and Excavator equipment. This will enable them to sit the National Competency standards assessment to obtain a national licence to operate this type of equipment throughout the country.

We designed a course that ran for 2 weeks, during this time the students completed a range of practical tasks with these machines. These tasks include the safe operation and use of Skidsteer and Excavators. Students learnt about basic maintenance, they were required to check the machines before, during and after use, looking for any signs of wear within hydraulics, hoses and engine.

Once they were assessed as competent to operate the machine they then moved on to more advanced operation, this included loading trucks, digging trenches and moving earth according to industry standards.

This type of training is over seen not only by a National Qualification it also must meet the national licensing requirements, from the licensing organisation WorkCover. This requires trainers to have knowledge of both systems and the training/assessment procedures for both.

These courses were delivered across New South Wales and Victoria, which means all the equipment, is transported up to distances of 1000km one way. You can imagine the issues with that logistics nightmare!

Most of the students are termed by the government as ‘long term unemployed’, which means they have been out of work for more than 12 months. This also places pressure on the instructors in relation to literacy and numeracy, attendance, learning and engagement in activities. Group sizes are up to 12.

Once the 2 week course has been completed a National WorkCover assessor attends and puts the students through a formal assessment process, which if they successfully complete, will give them a national licence in the operation of a Skidsteer and Excavator.

  2. This sounds interessted! I can imagine the logistics it must have been to transport the machines. Two Weeks isn´t that long time, how do you do if one student doesn´t pass on the last day? Is it possible to train for some more days then? How old are your students?
