Picture 1: Here is over school, Gothenburg Technical College, (GTC) is the result of an extensive partnership between business (AB Volvo and Volvo Cars) and the City of Gothenburg.
It is interesting to see that the Learning Centre is a partnership between Volvo and the City of Gothenburg. In Australia we have Learning Centers inside some of the big car manufacturing industries. However it is unusual for a city to be in a partnership with an industry. Does this parntership work well for the students?
Hi, I'm Lasse and I also work at GTC. The city sends us their unemployed habitants and if there are the least bit of interest in the students we usually deliver a employable mechanic to the labour market. This collaboration, we think, is a excellent way to work, we get students to our courses and the city keeps it´s unemployment figures at bay. This is, as we see it, a win win situation.
In Australia the training for mechanics takes place in industries and in the Vocational Colleges. We have about 5 very big car manufacturing companies in Australia and there is one very big company near Melbourne in Victoria.Here the Vocational College and the company work closely together. It is interesting that people who are unemployed come to your school. How does this work in Sweden? In Australia the employment agencies try and find work for unemployed people and often arrange for their training.
Mabye this is a way of helping the unemployed to get a jobb, but sometimes it´s more lika a help for the city, to take care of the weeker studients and to train them more in how to behave, to come at right time,responibly, and to have someone that cares of them. We also have a lot of studients that wanted to learn anouther work and getting the highest grade in the subjects. So its a mix of different people in every class. It´s sad to say that often the best studients gets less time, becauce the outer ones takes up your time...
At school they oftens train on Volvo cars, but we have some spairparts from outher carbrands. When the studients do their training at companies, they seach for their own places, then they can seach for a trainingplace at another brand. And a lot of the graduated studients gets work at the smaller workshops. Its easier to get jobb there than in the bigger Volvo workshops. Its because they always have an inside way of hire peolpe, when they are so big.
